Greetings from N’awlins!
Traveling is honestly one of the greatest joys in my life. I think disconnecting from a routine and immersing yourself in somewhere new is good for the soul and enlightening. Experiencing life separate from your own can give you a new perspective on the world and an appreciation for different cultures and traditions. Seeing the world has always been one of my main goals in life!
I have been very fortunate to have parents that have a passion for traveling as well, so I have seen many places in my short 25 years of life. I also believe that you don’t need to be rich in order to travel. Since I’ve started planning my own trips, I have discovered a few tips and tricks in order to save more of my money and make traveling a priority.
Now, I am by no means a financial advisor…but I HAVE had a savings account since birth (aka a tin can with Santa Claus on it that my dad made me put 10% of my allowance in every week). These are just a few tips for saving money that have helped me.
- Automatic Transfer…use that ish.
Every month I have my bank automatically transfer a certain amount of money into my savings account. This might sound like common sense, but I know if I leave the transfer up to me to do manually, I won’t do it. With automatic transfer, its like the money was never even in my checking account to begin with…I never even miss it! If you are able to save a small portion of your paycheck every month, you will be in a good place to take a trip in no time at all.
- Rewards Programs
I don’t know if this is common knowledge, but I had no idea that my debit card had a rewards program. It wasn’t until I logged on and did some digging that I found out I could turn my points into cash, and I had racked up over $200! You better bet that money went straight into my travel fund.
- Take a break from eating lunch out
This one’s tough…I KNOW. I always look forward to lunch time during the week, because it is the only few minutes of the day that I get to spend outside of the office. I understand this is a precious time for many 9 to 5ers like me. Even bringing your lunch for 7 days out of the month can save you a cool ~$100 a month. Then what do we do with that money? Add it to the travel fund.
- Sell your stuff
Everyone has stuff lying around that they don’t need. One of my goals for 2016 was to simplify my life and get rid of clutter. One of my main offenses in the clutter category is my propensity for hoarding clothes that I don’t wear. About once a month I clean out my closet and take my unwanted pieces to Buffalo Exchange or Plato’s Closet. If I bring in enough items, I can pretty much guarantee walking out with at least and extra $50 in my pocket. And guess where that money goes? Straight into the travel fund. $50+ a month might not sound like much, but it can add up quickly on top of your other savings!
I hope these tips can help you reach your travel goals! Next week I’ll be writing about some of my favorite tips and tools to find travel deals.
